At Education Emporium, we stock a number of resources to support teaching Shakespeare in senior high English. I regularly carry nine play summaries from Edcon Publishing. These books are great resources if students are struggling with understanding the language used in the plays. Each play is divided into sections that contain a short reading, vocabulary and comprehension questions. By using these units, students are able to understand the most important parts of the play without becoming befuddled by the language.
We also carry a few additional resources to help students study Shakespeare. I regularly stock Romeo and Juliet a novel study and The English Language a Short History of Vocabulary, both of which are published by S & S Learning. Romeo and Juliet contains a section that summarizes the story, gives biographical information, vocabulary activities, discussion and language questions and integration activities. The English Language discusses the development of the English language through the Old- and Middle-English periods which helps students understand some of the usage in Shakespeare’s plays.
I also carry Getting to Know Shakespeare, published by Teacher Created Resources. This resource discusses common themes found in many of the plays. These themes are included in one of the three chapters in the book: Supernatural Shakespeare, Crimes and Criminals, and Women of Words.
These guides are ideal for home-schooled children or for high school classrooms.
