Language Arts Games

Flashcards

Flashcards are useful for reinforcing specific skills and may be used by individuals for self-testing up to an entire class for review and “around the world*” type of games. 

 Alphabet flash cards.  80 cards total.  $9.50 each. 

Basic Picture flash cards.  96 cards total.  $9.50 each.

Basic Sight Words flash cards. 102 cards total.  $9.50 each.  

*Around the world is played by an entire class but only two participate at a time: 

  • The individuals stand;
  • A flash card is presented;
  • The first to respond with the correct answer is the winner;
  • The winner moves on to the next student;
  • Play continues until one student has defeated all of their classmates.

Learning Cubes

 Games 

The E-Z as ABC game includes 52 puzzle pieces, 26 word cards a vocabulary word list, directions and an alphabet strip.  This game develops letter and sound recognition, sequencing skills and may be played 7 ways.  For 1-4 players aged 3-7 years; $23.50 each

The Ladybug Letter Learning the Alphabet game contains 26 two-piece ladybug puzzles, 26 two-sided leaf letters and directions.  This game helps children match upper- and lower-case letters, introduces beginning sounds and may be played 3 ways.  For ages 3+; $11.75 each.

The Sight Words Bingo encourages recognitions of 100 of the most popular basic sight words.  Each game includes 36 game cards, bingo chips, calling cards and answer mat along with a game guide.  For 3 to 36 players, ages 6+; $11.75 each.

The Zingo Bingo encourages matching images with words.  Each game includes one tile dispenser, 72 picture tiles and 8 two-sided bingo cards.  For 2 to 8 players, ages 4+; $10.50 each.

Level 1 Sight Words Bingo allows children to practice reading 46 words and encourages increasing vocabulary and word recognition.  Each game consists of 36 playing cards, calling cards and mat, bingo chips and instructions.  For 3 to 36 players ages 5+; $12.75 each.

The object of Get the Picture is to be the first player with the main idea of 8 stories.  Each game includes 4 frames, 64 picture cards, 80 question cards and an activity guide.  For 2-4 players ages 7+, $25.25 each.  

Solve a mystery with the Hidden Hints game; answer three context clues correctly, receive a hint and get one step closer to solving the mystery.  The game includes the detective briefcase, 50 double-sided question cards, 40 hint cards, 16 game pieces and an activity guide.  For 2 to 4 players aged 7+; $25.25 each.

The purpose of Learning Games: Consonant Blends and Diagraphs is to take a confusing subject and make it fun!  This game consists of 4 game boards, 25 cards for each game and markers.  This game is for 2 to 5 players aged 5+; $14.75 each.

The purpose of Learning Games: Short and Long Vowels is to teach children the different vowel sounds.  The four game boards are based on nursery rhymes; there are also 25 game cards for each game and game markers.  This game is for 2 to 5 players aged 5+; $14.75 each.

The I Spy a Mouse in the House Picture Rhymes has pictures on the back of each mouse card; the purpose of the game is for the children to find the items on the house game board that rhymes with each picture.  The game consists of 36 game cards, the game board and directions.  This game is for 1 to 3 players ages 4+; $11.75 each. 

Teach the concepts of beginning, middle and end with the What Happens Next: Picture Sequencing Game.  Each game consists of 14 three-scene puzzles.  The game is for children age 3+; $11.75 each.

The 14 three-piece puzzles that comprise this game all have a word that starts with a blend such as “bl’, “dr”, and “sk”.  There are 14 beginning blends in total.  What else can the children find that starts with these blends?  The game is for children age 4+; $11.75 each.

Reading Safari can be used to identify sight words, nouns, verbs or adjectives.  The game includes a 41cm x41cm board, 184 game cards, 4 game markers, one die and directions.  This game is for up to 4 players, ages 5+; $25.25

The object of Sight Word Space Station is to collect the most sight words cards while uncovering the alien’s space station.  The game consists of a 41cm X 41cm board, 96 game cards and instructions.  There are two levels of play for grades K to 2; $23.25 each.

Other Resources

Sentence strips are useful tools for teaching writing; there are 100 strips per package, strips are 7.6cm X 60.9cm (3 inches X 24 inches).  $5.25 per package.

 

Each 4cm (1.5 inch) Word Rally cube contains 9 letters.  How many words can your children find?  Use for enrichment, centers or even a travel game.  $2.75 for each cube.

Fluency

Fluency is more than just reading smoothly, it is an indicator of reading comprehension.  Does the child recognize the words he or she is reading?  Are they pronounced correctly?  Does the child read ahead?  All of these are indicators that a child understands what they are reading. 
At Education Emporium we currently have two different resources for fluency in stock.  First Rate Fluency, from Carson-Dellosa, contains activities that are designed to increase, among others, expressiveness, accuracy and rhythm.  Activities for Fluency, published by Teacher Created Resources, is divided into a number of different topics that include activites such as flash cards, matching and word searches.

Due to popular demand, we stock several different printing and handwriting resources at Education Emporium.  We regularly carry Evan-Moor’s Daily Handwriting Practise in Traditional Manuscript and Daily Handwriting Practise in Contemporary Cursive.  We also stock Skill Builders Handwriting in Modern Manuscript from Carson-Dellosa.  If you are less concerned about your child’s handwriting matching a particular style, then our last series, Italic Handwriting is the one for you.  This series has children practice the kind of handwriting that most adults actually do: there are few flourishes and the letters are more straight-up rather than leaning.    All of these resources are appropriate for all grade levels.
