The Alberta grade 6 social studies curriculum consists of three topics:

  • Citizens Participating in Decision Making
  • Historical Models of Democracy: Ancient Athens
  • Historical Models of Democracy:  the Iroquois Confederacy

Education Emporium stocks three Eduguide units that address these curricular requirements.  Democracy in Canada explores the principles of democracy through theoretical discussion and by focussing on how individuals interact and cause change.  In addition the unit looks at the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  Finally, local and provincial governments are examined.    The second unit,  Ancient Athens, describes how citizens participated in the government, the social structure of ancient Athens and the extent to which equity and fairness formed a part of the  culture of ancient Athens.   The third unit, Iroquois Confederacy, which has been recently published,  explores how the confederacy was structured, the roles of various members of the society within this structure and the role of concensus within the confederacy.

In addtion to the Eduguide units, Education Emporium regularly stocks a number of additional books on these topics.  On the topic of citizens participating in government, we carry Our Canadian Governments from S & S Learning.  This book discusses the structure of our federal government, the roles of members of this government as well as the structure of provincial and local governments.  Elections in Canada, details the electoral process at the local, provincial and federal levels.   The Prime Ministers of Canada provides brief biographies of all of our prime ministers.

Education Emporium also carries a number of books on ancient Greece.  In addition to books, we also stock items that help enrich your social studies program, among these items are the Professor Noggins games specifically Ancient Civilizations, First Peoples and the History of Canada.  Teachers could also use the Ancient Civilization Simulation to foster student learning.
