The Alberta grade 5 social studies curriculum consists of three topics:

  • Physical Geography of Canada
  • Histories and Stories of Ways of Life in Canada
  • Canada: Shaping an Identity

Education Emporium stocks four Eduguide units that address these curricular requirements.  Canada: Physical Geography explores the physical regions of Canada in addition to the effects these regions have on climate, vegetation, resources and settlement.  The second unit, Ways of Life in Canada: Histories and Stories (First Nations, Metis & Inuit), describes the cultures of the first nation peoples and the impact these cultures have had on the Canadian identity.  The third unit, Ways of Life in Canada: Histories and Stories (French, British and Other Immigrants), explores how the Canadian identity and culture were influenced by subsequent waves of immigration.  The final unit, Canada: Shaping an Identity, focuses inquiry on such pivotal events as Confederation, the building of the railway, World Wars I and II, the Great Depression, The Statute of Westminster and the 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well the creation of Nunavut.

Education Emporium also proudly stocks a number of books that explore Canada’s history, geography and culture.  Quite a few of these titles are published by Canadian publisher S & S Learning and include Canadian Provinces and Territories;  Exploring Canada;  Amazing Canadian History;  Canada’s First Nations,  Aboriginal Peoples of Canada;  Explorers and Mapmakers of Canada;  New France: The Founders 1608-1700;  New France: The Rise and Fall 1700-1775.  Several of these books would also be valuable when teaching specific units in grades four, six and seven.

Teachers may also want to include enrichment activities such as Professor Noggins’ Canadian Geography and Explorers games when teaching grade five social studies.
